Who I Am

I’m Dan Smith, a tax, healthcare, business and intellectual property lawyer.

I grew up in Jackson, Tennessee, and attended public schools there.

I graduated from Vanderbilt University with a double major in French and English. I considered going to graduate school to pursue a post-graduate degree in French, but I ultimately decided to attend law school instead.

I graduated from Vanderbilt Law School and immediately began practicing law at a Nashville law firm. Over the years and prior to my founding of DPS Legal Counsel, I practiced in two large law firms, two small law firms, and as in-house attorney for a real estate development company.

In 1990, my wife and I moved to New York City, where I attended New York University School of Law and obtained a Masters in Law degree (LL.M) in taxation. We loved living in New York, and if we get a chance to talk, I would be glad to tell you all about our favorite restaurants and some of our best memories from our time there.

I focus my practice on serving the unique tax and business law needs facing small business owners and healthcare practices.

Education

I graduated summa cum laude from Vanderbilt University, where I was a member of The Phi Beta Kappa Society. I obtained my law degree from Vanderbilt University’s School of Law, whereI was an associate editor of the Vanderbilt Law Review. In addition, I have an LL.M. (Master of Laws) in Taxation from New York University.

I am admitted to practice law in Tennessee. I am also admitted to practice before the United States District Court, Western District of Tennessee, the United States District Court, Middle District of Tennessee, and the United States Tax Court.

I am a member of the Tennessee Bar Association and also a Fellow in the Nashville Bar Foundation. I am a member of the American Health Lawyers Association.

I have received an AV®Preeminent™ peer review rating from Martindale-Hubbell®.
